Helping GSK Singapore Stay Cool and Balanced

Helping GSK SINGAPORE STAY COOL AND BALANCED

Nalco Water, an Ecolab company, is about impacting what matters and protecting one of the world’s vital resources - water. By partnering with GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) to activate operational efficiencies, Ecolab helped the healthcare company to minimize water use and maximize water quality at its water treatment facilities.

Staying true to its brand promise, Ecolab supported GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) on its journey to winning honorable mention under the Best Practices category at the Energy Efficiency Energy Partnership (EENP) Awards 2018.

GSK Singapore currently manufactures 13 pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) for a range of medicines prescribed for the treatment of respiratory, HIV, gastro-intestinal, allergy, anti-viral and neurological conditions. It is imperative that GSK’s cooling tower maintains a healthy balance across biocide and scale inhibitor - two chemicals necessary to control cooling water parameters.

GSK’s previous treatment system had no feedback control to vary the amount of chemicals, which caused a biocide and scale inhibitor overdose, significantly raising the potential for corrosion issues and system fouling which could have resulted in bacteria growth and poor system performance.

By implementing Ecolab’s innovative 3D Trasar technology, GSK replaced its system with an automatic chemical dosing system. Not only did the new system introduce tracer molecules in the chemicals which enabled accurate real-time measurement of the chemical concentration in the cooling water, GSK also benefitted from a 5% improvement in systems with an annual savings of 409 MWh or S$62,630 as a result of optimizing its chemical concentrations.

INNOVATION and TECHNOLOGY

Ecolab’s solutions deliver a healthy impact without sacrificing the quality and trustworthiness that consumers expect from GSK’s products and brand.

3D TRASAR™ Technology for Cooling Water delivers on-demand control and optimization of cooling systems, helping customers protect their assets while delivering water and energy savings. The innovative technology detects the upsets that precede scaling, corrosion, and biofouling using real-time data and determines the correct response, to deliver optimal performance and savings. This solution has helped GSK maintain the highest manufacturing standards and achieve sustainable savings that help contribute to GSK’s drive for efficiency.
