Insights from Ecolab’s Watermark Study in Indonesia; Why We Should All Advance Water Conservation
Indonesian Consensus on Roles in Water Conservation Funding: For the first time, the study reveals Indonesian perspectives on climate change and water issues, highlighting a widespread concern for environmental challenges, with a particular focus on water sustainability as a shared responsibility among all stakeholders.
Jakarta – Ecolab, a global leader in sustainability, aims to help industries save 300 billion gallons of water by 2030. The company is focused on tackling the pressing issue of water scarcity by encouraging industries and businesses to implement water-saving strategies and achieve sustainability objectives, aligning with the 'Water for Shared Prosperity' theme of the recent 10th World Water Forum in Bali, Indonesia, where global leaders, experts, and stakeholders discussed on the critical role of sustainable water use and integrated water resource management as key drivers of economic growth, social equity, and environmental.
Water is a critical component of business operations, and as part of its climate and water scarcity work, Ecolab recently released The Global Water Assessment Tracker study, which was conducted in 15 countries where Ecolab operates, including in Indonesia. The study was designed to examine water management conditions by measuring the benefits and usage of water.
“Addressing the urgent water crisis requires transformative thinking about water conservation. The Ecolab WatermarkTM Study underscores the necessity for leaders to actively engage in the protection of our vital resource – water. The study narrows its focus on water and consumer perspectives of the state of water stewardship through water’s importance, usage, connection to climate and responsibility as a shared responsibility among government, corporations, NGOs, or individuals to effectively tackle these critical global challenges." said Gregory Lukasik, senior vice president and market head, Ecolab Southeast Asia.
In Indonesia, the study reveals 89 percent of the population expects the government to take greater action in ensuring efficient public facilities, such as imposing higher fines on those who pollute public water supplies. Additionally, 85 percent of respondents hope for greater global investment in efficient water use. The consumer believes that businesses should be fined for inefficiency, rather than individuals being taxed for water usage. In addition, 79 percent of respondents stated that clean water is a top priority and agree that clean water management is the responsibility of both the government and the private sector.
Evan Jayawiyanto, assistant vice president and country head, Ecolab Indonesia, stressed the importance of multi-stakeholder collaboration for the sustainable management of the country's water resources amidst its developmental pursuits. "As Indonesia aims to meet its development objectives, the demand for clean water is set to rise, making it crucial to have in-depth planning and enforce tougher water management regulations," he stated. Additionally, he further highlighted the crucial need for stringent policies to guarantee that industries manage water responsibly.
